Of Warriors and Sages is the second book in the Arlan's Pledge series by Jenn Lees. Picking up shortly after the events of the first book in the series, we are brought to Lees two worlds now that Arlan and Rhiannon separated, though still very much in love with one another. This separation once again allows us to enjoy the creative use of multiple perspectives Lees introduced us to in the first book of the Arlan's Pledge series. Rhiannon's first-person views continue to show us the complex differences between the two worlds, giving us the main character's opinion alongside the descriptive details of the other characters and their deeds in a classic third-person format.
Lees's worldbuilding is again on display as we get a better view of the author's Gaelic-inspired fantasy world. In this second book, we get a better look at Arlan's home, seeing the fantastic process that Lees has taken to make a world with its own history, people, and customs, allowing readers to see the differences and similarities between the two worlds. It also drives home precisely how far the main characters have been dragged from one another.
Of Warriors and Sages is a fast-paced novel that leaves you wondering what will happen next. Each conflict seems to be settled by another aspect that makes things even more complicated and leaves the reader cheering on characters that you can not help but grow fond of as you read about their journey. This book, like the first in the series, is a must-read.
