The Last Gods - A Book Review
The Last Gods by Adam Brownlie is an exciting science fiction book that touches on subjects many avoid. Going into subjects of religion and technology, science, and blasphemies, we follow Elodie, a young Christian woman, as she learns to cope and deal with the ever-changing and increasingly technologically advancing world. With a husband who does not share her religious views, Elodie often finds herself at odds with her spouse, if not over their different opinions, then the views her friends hold of him. But somehow, the two seem to go the distance, lasting many years, until Elodie loses what she thinks is most important to her.
The Last Gods has a cast of characters that Brownlie has done a fantastic job of creating. Each has a personality that screams realism in their flaws as we see them change and develop through Elodie’s particularly long lifespan. Selfish, lustful, vain, arrogant, and prideful, these characters hit on every nerve of humanity while ascending to a new level as opinions and personalities slowly alter. People clash, love, and give up their bodies on this highly advanced Earth with fantastic world-building that feels possible, even if it is purely science fiction at the time of its writing.
Fast-paced and ever-changing around our one constant character, Elodie, we see how trial and error, love, religion, and science can alter a person’s thinking. Brownlie has shown us a kaleidoscope of human feelings in this must-read and highly cerebral story. It is a tale that will leave you wondering what will happen next in the story and human evolution.
